Ambitious Science Teaching: Professional Learning Series

Join us for a year-long professional learning series centered on the book Ambitious Science Teaching by Windschitl, Thompson, and Braaten. This series will provide teachers with the tools, strategies, and collaborative structures to design and facilitate science learning that deeply engages students in sensemaking and equitable participation.

Format:

Five 1-hour after-school virtual sessions (book study application)

One full-day in-person event in April (collaborative planning, practice, and reflection)

Teachers receive a complimentary copy of Ambitious Science Teaching upon registration

Book Study Breakdown:

  • Laying the Foundation: vision of ambitious science teaching, equity, and creating a classroom culture of risk-taking and sensemaking.
  • Planning for Engagement: Designing anchor phenomena and storylines that connect to students' experiences and big science ideas.
  • Supporting Student Thinking: Tools and strategies to surface and support diverse student ideas during investigations.
  • Pressing for Evidence & Explanation: Guiding students to use evidence, build explanations, and revise models over time.
  • Sustaining the Work: Using assessment, feedback, and continuous improvement structures to refine ambitious science teaching practices.

One-day In-person Event:

  • Deep-dive into designing storyline units.
  • Collaborative practice with classroom tools and discussion routines.
  • Reflection and planning for continued implementation.

This series is ideal for grades 5-12 science teachers seeking to strengthen their instructional practice and create more equitable, engaging, and rigorous science classrooms.
